Staying Up to Date on Digital Marketing Trends

One of the things that we love most about the digital marketing industry is that it is constantly evolving. That being said, it can be just as equally frustrating trying to stay ahead of the curve in an industry that’s so fast-paced. Even as people who are immersed in digital everyday, we admit that while staying current is extremely important, it can be a challenge to sift through the clutter and find the trends that are truly important to making our business and clients better. We do, however, have a few tricks and tips to avoid this challenge and stay up to date on trends the right way!

Do Your Research

There are hundreds of thousands of articles posted each day on the “latest”digital trends. And while more information is great, it can be a little confusing on which publications and stories to read if your whole timeline or inbox is filled to the brim every morning. We have found that the best way to combat this is by doing your research and learning which publishers to trust. There are certain publications that are more credible than others and usually backed by industry leaders. Wasted time is wasted opportunity, so if you’re sitting down to read a few articles, you want to make sure that they are backed with research and facts, especially with all the recent epidemic of fake news. Some of our personal industry favorite reads are Moz, Hubspot, and Ad Age!

Schedule A Weekly Catch-up

Sifting through the credible publications is only step one. The next, and frankly most important step, is actually reading them, which can be harder than it seems sometimes :-) When we are busy, this is a task that can easily be pushed to the back-burner, but it shouldn’t be because staying relevant in a saturated market is more important now than ever. A great way to manage reading up on industry trends is subscribing to a few of your favorite publications so that you do not have to spend your time searching for new trends. Instead, they will show up directly in your inbox, and most publications even let you choose your preferences so you can decide if you want a weekly update or daily update. Once you have that set, block out specific time periods throughout the week so read the articles coming into your inbox. Some people prefer spending 10 minutes every morning reading up on recent articles, and others prefer blocking out an hour to catch-up on everything on a weekly basis. Both approaches work, and it is honestly just personal preference of what makes sense for your schedule!

Don’t Jump On Every Trend

While it’s important to be proactive about digital trends, it is also important to remember to not attempt to adopt every shiny new thing that comes your way. It is key to read up and be familiar with what everyone is talking about, but there are many fly-by trends and fads that are seen with a growing industry (Remember Vine or Periscope? Yikes). Just because one source tells you that you need to start advertising on a new platform that came out last week, doesn’t mean it is the best idea. Staying up to date on trends does not mean changing your business model or strategy the second something new comes out. It is important to be consistent, take in the new trends, and evaluate what makes sense to adopt for your business.

All in all, the digital industry is growing at a speed that can feel hard to keep up with sometimes. This feeling is normal, and even as digital marketers, we feel it too. But that is where staying up to date comes in, as it really one of the most important steps to be successful in this industry.
